Limtronik celebrates anniversary: A look back at the history of electronics manufacturing

The history of Limtronik GmbH began 55 years ago as “Telefonbau und Normalzeit GmbH” with the manufacture of products for public switching technology. After several name changes and changes of ownership, the company began operating as an EMS service provider in 2000. In 2010, it was spun off from the EN Group and renamed Limtronik GmbH.

“When I joined the company in 1992, Limtronik was implementing its first team-oriented production concepts and the precursors to today's manufacturing execution systems. With our independence in 2010, we laid the foundations for our current smart factory,” explains Gerd Ohl, Managing Director at Limtronik.

Digitization driven by necessity

One of the most important requirements at Limtronik from the very beginning was traceability. In order to be able to demonstrate an appropriate track-and-trace system, the EMS service provider introduced a Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

“Since Limtronik initially worked primarily for telecommunications companies, the company had to manage a wide variety of variants and produce in a traceable manner. The foundations for the track-and-trace system used today were laid during this time,” explains Gerd Ohl.

Starting in 2009/2010, Limtronik gradually modernized its machinery. “The focus was on ensuring that interfaces were in place that would enable the machines to pass on information on quality and consumption, for example. These were the first steps toward the intelligent, networked processes that we are implementing today,” explains Gerd Ohl.

Limtronik did not carry out any comprehensive evaluation processes for the digital transformation; instead, the solutions were always developed based on specific needs. Compliance with standard requirements was always a key driver – as was staying one step ahead of the competition.

The path to the smart factory

The digitalization steps led Limtronik to co-found SEF Smart Electronic Factory e.V. in 2014—an Industry 4.0 initiative for German SMEs. The association's research and development platform is integrated into Limtronik's ongoing operations—it is not a model factory, but a real production environment. Limtronik has thus become a pioneer in the EMS industry in terms of digitalization.

With this digital foundation, the company is now able to respond flexibly to increasing demands. "Our order books are well filled, but the complexity is constantly increasing. For example, the demands on assembly are growing as electronic devices become smaller and smaller, but at the same time more powerful. Only through automation, data-driven processes, and system networking can we keep up," says Gerd Ohl.

Accordingly, Limtronik continuously invests in the further development of its production – including MES enhancements, AI-supported solutions such as AOI programs, and energy management modules. Recently, a new, state-of-the-art SMD line was also put into operation.

Promoting young talent and international orientation

Limtronik attaches great importance to developing and promoting young talent from within its own ranks. With a training quota of over ten percent and numerous awards such as chamber, state, and federal winners, the company's long-standing commitment to promoting young talent is paying off.

“Over the past 55 years, we have trained over 600 skilled workers. Many of them are still associated with Limtronik in a wide variety of roles,” says Gerd Ohl. “Digital competence is becoming a basic requirement for remaining competitive in the global electronics market – but without qualified specialists, it cannot be put to use,” says Gerd Ohl.

At the same time, Limtronik is increasingly focusing on international markets. With a location in the USA and global partnerships, the company offers classic EMS services such as assembly and control cabinet construction worldwide.

Recent investments in modern production lines, digital systems, and AI applications demonstrate how Limtronik implements technological developments in its day-to-day operations. At the same time, the company makes it clear that digitalization cannot function without qualified specialists. The combination of commitment to training, practical technology integration, and international presence will therefore continue to determine the course of the company in the future.
